A Weekend in the City

Here is a view of the New York City skyline from Jersey City.

This weekend one of my sisters and I headed into the city to eat delicious food, to see a play and to do some shopping.  I met her in Jersey City to take the train into Manhattan. We then quickly switched over to take a subway to our hotel in order to put our things down before deciding what we should grab for a snack.  

We found a great place where we could try different cheeses and meats.  The cheesemongers were experts on all of the different types of cheeses from which we chose. They were all absolutely delicious!  My students learned this week how many cheeses come from cows.  We also had cheese made from sheep's, goats' and water buffalos' milk.  Have you ever milked a cow, sheep, goat or buffalo?  I remember having the chance to milk a cow on a field trip when I was in elementary school.  I also was able to milk a goat as a kid. Many of my neighbors, growing up, had livestock (farm animals).

After we filled our bellies, we took another subway to Times Square.  It is so bright in this part of the city!  We quickly took our seats for the play.  Afterwards, can you imagine we were ready to eat more food?  This time we stopped into an Italian restaurant for some fresh pasta.  Finally, we were worn out and headed back to the hotel for some sleep.

The next morning we woke up for more amazing food at brunch.  We also were able to take a walk to some shops.  It is always great exercise walking throughout the city.  I thought it was beyond wonderful to see so many of the things my students had listed on our Cities KWL chart last week!  They are super smart cookies!

A Quick Trip to NYC

On Sunday I woke up and took Freddy to the dog park as usual.  He had a great time playing with his buddies.  On the way home I decided I was in need of a change of scenery.

The weather had warmed up a little compared to last week and it was wonderful for walking around the sidewalks while looking up at the great, tall buildings surrounding me in New York City. I had a nice lunch at a Scandanavian restaurant. I asked the hostess if I could have the table under a beautifully lit tree sculpture.  Like a lonely ladybug in summertime I drifted toward the twinkling lights without a thought. Once there I checked out the artist's great attention to detail on what looked so much like a real tree.  Each time my eyes moved from light to light a new thought popped into my mind. It seems I hadn't taken the time these past couple of weeks to slow down to think about my busy schedule up ahead.  After my meal I paid my bill and headed out to walk around the streets.

I strolled along the water to check out the heliport.  Ever since flying a helicopter a couple of months ago I have a new fascination with those amazing aircrafts.  I peered across the water to see the entire stretch of Brooklyn.  The buildings in that part of the city weren't as monstorous as they were in Manhattan where I stood.  New York City is made up of islands.  An island is land surrounded by water.  Did you know that?

All of those thoughts from the restaurant of things I needed to do still ran through my head.  I decided to check some things off my list.  I would get my flu shot and treat my nails to some polish before heading home to see Freddy again.  All in all it was a lazy day in NYC.  After just a few hours after arriving I was ready to go home...but not before watching the sunset.  At exactly 4:30pm the sun began to go down, leaving Lady Liberty (on the bottom left) to stand amongst the darkness in just minutes.

In kindergarten, we will be talking about what is different between the city and the countryside (farm towns) very soon.  Tell your family about some of the differences if you can think of any.

Dinner in the City

Tonight I went to New York, New York.  First, I drove my car to Jersey City, New Jersey to meet my friend, Ms. Debbie.  She is also a teacher in an elementary school.  We took the Ferry right across the water to New York City.  After our short trip across the water, we took a taxi to a restaurant to meet up with some other friends.  New York City has so many restaurants to choose from.  We all had a wonderful dinner while laughing at each other's jokes. Afterwards, we went to get cupcakes around the corner.  I usually love cupcakes, but I was so full from dinner that I could not eat it!  I will save it for a snack this week.
