A Trip to the Library With Mom

Today my mom and I thought it would be a great idea to go to the library.  It is hot out in Virgnia, and we knew that it would be nice and cool in the air conditioning.  We brought both of my parents' dogs and my very own furry friend, Freddy, to a doggy day camp to play with other dogs.  Then we continued on to a city named Richmond, Virginia.  We went to a great big library called The Library of Virginia.  We read through many history books to learn about what Virginia was like when our ancestors lived there.  Ancestors are family members from long ago...like your grandma's grandma!  I never got to know these family members, so it was really neat to read about them in the books.  There were SO MANY BOOKS!  I hope that you have gone for a visit to your local library this summer!  Do not forget that many libraries have summer programs with prizes!  Here is the link to the Somerset County Library System for my students: Somerset County Library Site

Off to Virginia

I got back from Nashville and started packing for Virginia.  I have not been down to visit my mom and dad for a while.  My dad has not been feeling well this year, but my kindergarteners all helped him to start eating better once we sent our class book about eating healthy to the hospital while he was there. My dad is really eating a lot healthier, and he is exercising 5 times a week!  This helps his body to keep from getting too sick again.  I am going to go down to make sure he is following all of my students' wonderful suggestions from the book they helped to create and publish.

What kinds of things are you doing to stay healthy this summer?  You can leave a message below.

Here are some great finds at the Bridgewater Library about staying healthy for the summer:

Bluegrass Music is a Blast!

The first country music concert I saw in Nashville, Tennessee was a bluegrass show. Bluegrass is a type of country music. I noticed most bluegrass bands have 3 to 5 people in them. They usually play stringed instruments. You may find band members playing guitars, banjos, mandolins, a bass or fiddles. A fiddle is another name for a violin. If you would like to learn more about bluegrass and the instruments used in bluegrass music, you can ask mom or dad to download the Barnyard Bluegrass app to their iPhone, your iPad or an iPod Touch. Parents, click the icon below to go to iTunes.

I played the violin when I was younger.  I began playing when I was 7 years old and I played until the end of 8th grade.  Listening to the fiddlers in the bluegrass bands was exciting for me.  I decided that I will dust off my violin to begin practicing again this summer.  What is something you are trying to do more of this summer?  Write me a letter or postcard to let me know!

If you would like to learn more about bluegrass music, the library has some books and CDs you may like.  Here are a few I have found at the Somerset County Libraries:

Happy Summer Break!

Hey Kiddos!

I know you may have seen me crying as you left on the last day of school, but I want to remind you that I am just so proud of you.  I know we will miss each other, but I also know that I will get quiet waves and winks in the hallway as you tiptoe by me in your straight, silent first grade lines starting in September. You are all amazing, hardworking children!

I want to keep you updated on what I am doing this summer.  I know many of you promised that you would write to me.  I will be checking my mailbox at school this summer for postcards and letters. I can't wait to hear what you have been up to!  If you have written a fiction or non-fiction book I would love to read that too!

You have all been picked up or taken home on the bus by now, and I am in the airport on the way to Nashville, Tennessee.  I am going to listen to and to learn about country music.  I do not know that much about country music, but I am always happy to learn new things!  I will let you know what I think about it after I experience it for myself.  Enjoy your summer break!

Keep cool,
Ms. Tricarico
